Blue skies for SIA?

Image
Hey travel fans....is revenge travel fever finally over? Apparently from SIA chart, it may seem so in June 4 months back. It cracked below the 200 days moving average (DMA) last week when oil tested $100/bbl and before news of Hamas' attack. Despite much bad news it had climbed up above the 200 DMA line and 6.40 to 6.47 region could be a good entry point to accumulate. However do expect mild turbulence from market noises and parachute out if 6.20 breaks. With normalised traveling, SIA is quite a good counter to add into your portfolio! If travel fans are still not getting enough of revenge travel and still catching up with more countries to fly to, we better start considering booking some cheap airfares before the year end vacation starts.

"They broke the deal!"....but will this break the uptrend momentum of Straits Times Index this year?

Image
Straits Times index (source : POEMS Mercury) The parallel uptrend channel of Straits Times Index that started this year was tested once during end of March when the financial market was getting concerned about the negative yield inversion. It is now once again stress tested due to Trump's twitter tantrum last Sunday. Yesterday, Trump claimed 'They broke the deal' but will his hard stand on trade talk break the STI uptrend momentum? We shall see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT52OB05prU https://youtu.be/Yj5ac3w-g_4?t=28

#10yearchallenge

Image
The latest craze in social media these days is the #10yearchallenge. You could easily find via your social media feed that savvy young at hearts are posting pictures of themselves being more muscular, prettier, healthier or more successful than they were 10 years back. Apart from using the challenge for humour. Some of us are also creating awareness on the issues the world is facing right now. Problems like global warming, cost of living or state of political uncertainties etc. I, too, think something good about investment can be shared with my readers by using the #10yearschallenge. Investment is just like successful people going through with their daily activities in a discipline manner to enrich their life. They don't celebrate with a nice instagramable perfect selfie at the end of every ten years. Instead, through their numerous ten years, they learn both painful lessons and some good opportunities that could come along their way and they gain valuable experience and ...

Tax savings for Singaporean income earner by contributing to SRS (Supplementary Retirement Scheme)

Image
One key principle of tax planning is that you, the income earner,  must always save on tax expenses by paying at the lowest tax bracket. You don't need to be a Tax Accountant to know that SRS works for you to managed your Tax planning effectively. For every one dollar you save into your SRS account brings down dollar for dollar your taxable income. If you are a high income tax bracket payer, it could even bring you down to a lower tax bracket. For 2017, the median salary of a Singaporean is S$4,232. (Source http://stats.mom.gov.sg/Pages/Income-Summary-Table.aspx ) That is $50,784 annually. The tax payer is getting some of his taxable income to be charged at the 7% tax bracket group. By contributing the full SRS allowed of $15,300. The tax payer actually bring him down to the 3.5% tax bracket group. It is a tax savings of $912.94. That makes an almost thousand dollars of tax savings for Singaporean income earner with median income by contributing to Supplementary Retirement S...

Thai Beverage... Happy Hour not yet but soon?

Image
After a sobering (pun intended) August that World Cup 2018 would not trigger any decent numbers in liquor sales. Thai Beverage had formed a double bottom when it traded sideways for 2 weeks. Stock had continue to bounce upwards ever since. As weekend draws near and with the counter trading on a low volume. One might see profit taking before the weekend before there is a possibility of a more genuine testing of the 50 MA line next week. Where can Income Investor go if they have a 10 years horizon?

Image
It's been a while since SGX roll out a retail bond and Astrea IV is the talk of the financial market lately. Instead of the high capital required of $250K of bond investment, the attractiveness about retail bond is that it comes in a lower capital of $2,000. This allows retail investor to be able to diversify their investment portfolio without subjecting $250K to a single bond asset class and use their rest of their capital to invest into other asset classes. A comparison was done on other asset classes which income investor usually like to receive their regular investment income from. Funds in Savings account and Retail Bonds have more certainty than the rest as the capital remains the same after ten years. Whereas the market value for MMFs, ETFs and Equities would change. Comparison disregard other factors and look specifically just in the absolute return without any compounding effect that an investor could get from their interest, coupons or dividends. The yield is assume t...
